Express Entry is an electronic system for managing permanent residence applications under existing immigration programs. You need to meet the eligibility criteria for at least one of following programs in order to apply through Express Entry system:
- Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)
- Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)
- Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
Provinces and territories can also recruit candidates from the Express Entry pool through the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) to meet local labour market needs.
The Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs) allow Canadian provinces and territories to nominate individuals who wish to immigrate to Canada and who are interested in settling in a particular province. Most provinces and territories (except Quebec) in Canada have their own unique Provincial Nominee Programs, and also can nominate candidates through their Express Entry streams.
You may be able to sponsor certain relatives to immigrate to Canada under the Family Class. Depending on your circumstances, you can sponsor your:
- Spouse, (common-law or conjugal) partner
- Dependent children
- Parents and grandparents
- Other relatives
For parents and grandparents, you can also consider Super Visa which allows eligible parents and grandparents to stay in Canada for up to 2 years per visit. The Super Visa is a multi-entry visa that provides multiple entries for a period up to 10 years.
A Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) is generally required before a Canadian employer can hire a temporary foreign worker. (formerly known as a Labour Market Opinion, LMO)
The permanent resident card (PR Card) is the official proof of your status as a permanent resident in Canada. A PR card is usually issued for five years, and should be extended if your PR card is expired or will expire in less than nine months. You must meet the minimum residency requirement (730 days within the past 5 years).
Once you meet certain conditions, you can apply for Canadian citizenship.
Temporary resident status is valid for a specific period of time and you must ensure that your status as a temporary resident remains valid while you are in Canada.
